Dungeon Master

“It’s good to be the Dungeon Master! Not only do you get to tell fantastic stories about heroes, villains, monsters, and magic, but you also get to create the world in which these stories live.”

— "The Dungeon Master’s Guide” (Wizards of the Coast)

A word with the Dungeon Master

Hello Fellow Ebrissian’s (I am still debating if individuals from the world of Ebris should be Ebrissian or Ebrisites – perhaps I’ll start a poll if I can’t decide).

My name is Cas, and, as you probably know, I am the Dungeon Master (DM) for Roll with Adventure. As evident by the fact you are reading this letter you have found your way to our little corner of Creation and perhaps have even listened to an episode or two or however many we have put out since this letter was written. I certainly hope you have enjoyed what the party and I have created from our imaginations to your ears, I certainly am enjoying it!

As you may hear reference to throughout the podcast and on the blog, the world of Ebris has grown and expanded from the stories that have already been told within it. “Of Shadows and Bliss” is simply the start of the stories we hope to share with each and every one of you. There are many more tales beyond this one: Will we learn the tales of the fabled Desert of Glass & Flame where the Crusaders took the life of a living god? Or will we hear the crash of waves amidst the Chrystelm Sea and the whispers of what lies beneath? Perhaps our gaze will turn across the Chrystelm Sea to the distant rumours of a far flung continent of imperial might? Or will we listen to the cry of the elements - shackled and chained?

Personally, if I had my way, I’d share all of these stories and more with you - but, we’re starting small here - with a single story in our flagship campaign. Will we learn who the mysterious individual is that wrote the letters that drew our heroes together? Will we find out the source of Melion’s shapeshifting powers? Will we learn of the purpose that Fayleth’s dead mother longs for her to complete? Will Jovan open up to reveal the shadow of his past? And will Kuori’s past involvement in the Blissful Rebellion be explored?

All I can say is: I don’t know.

You, our party, and even I will just have to wait to see where this story takes us. But, what I can say is that the tale that currently lays before us, is one of happiness and joy, mixed with sorrow and hate. It is a story of past wrongs, of betrayals, and salvation. It will teach us that grudges can be held beyond the span of even a single lifetime but redemption can be found in a moment’s choice.

So, I hope that you will stay with us and listen along on our journey. I am sure that you will have questions, and please - feel free to ask them. But, two of my favourite authors Brandon Sanderson &, the late, Robert Jordan had a favourite phrase for answering certain questions: read and find out (RAFO). The phrase is not meant to be dismissive of the question or the inquiring mind; but, rather avoids answering the question as a means to not spoil future events. I hope you will bear with me as I adopt a similar phrase: listen and find out (LAFO). So, please, if you get the chance, ask your questions, search for the future, pick apart the possibilities, and discuss till your heart’s content. I will answer what I believe I can or direct you to LAFO.

With that, I’ve rambled on long enough, hopefully another episode has gone up through Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Overcast, & Pocket Casts, and you can get back to listening. If not, I hope you will subscribe and follow along with our adventure.

Your friendly neighbourhood DM,

Cas
